Choose the Right Shipping Method: DDP vs Door to Door vs Port to Port
DDP is an international trade term. It stipulates that the seller is responsible for all risks and costs from the point of origin to the destination, including customs duties and value-added taxes(VAT).
Door-to-Door is a logistics solution that can be either DDP door-to-door or FOB/EXW door-to-door. The parties responsible for costs and risks vary depending on the Incoterms.
The main difference between the two is that DDP is a trade clause, stipulating the division of liability and risk between the buyer and the seller, while Door to Door is an additional shipping service provided by the freight forwarder. It includes picking up goods from the shipper’s designated location or warehouse and completing the entire logistics process to deliver the goods to the buyer’s address.
The main difference between door-to-door and port-to-port shipping lies in the scope of service. Unlike door-to-door, port-to-port shipping refers to the logistics services provided by freight forwarders from the port of loading to the port of destination. Similar to door-to-port services, shipping agents expand upon the port-to-port service by adding services such as pickup and customs clearance at the port of origin. Usually, importers with long-term local customs clearance agents will choose Door-to-Port or Port-to-Port services. But door-to-door remains a cost-effective and efficient shipping method.
