Let GWT Handle the Complexity Before Your DG Cargo Departs

After years of handling DG cargo shipments from China to Latin America, we’ve learned that many delays begin long before cargo reaches the vessel.

Different suppliers may provide inconsistent MSDS versions, UN classifications, or packaging information. Carrier restrictions and missing compliance documents can also delay approvals and shipment schedules.

GWT helps you reduce these risks before departure by reviewing documents, verifying shipment details, and coordinating with suppliers and carriers in advance.

Real Case Studies|DG Cargo Shipping

Strict Pre-shipment Document Inspection for DG Cargo Shipping
Strict Pre-shipment Document Inspection for DG Cargo Shipping

A Chinese chemical supplier arranged a DDP shipment of 1 x 20GP container from Shenzhen to Chancay Port. The factory completed production and packaging in 2 weeks and entrusted GWT with the dangerous goods booking.

During the pre-booking review, we found that the actual packaging did not match the information required in the dangerous goods declaration. Some UN packaging labels also differed from the DG submission content. Based on our experience, the shipping company was likely to request additional information or even return the DG approval. We immediately notified the factory to recheck the packaging information, dangerous goods declaration, and the DG documents, and confirm that all the information is consistent before submitting it for review by the shipping company.

Ultimately, the container passed the approval of the shipping company and customs and arrived at Chancay Port according to the original schedule. Our local customs clearance team in Peru was responsible for customs clearance and delivering the goods to the consignee’s warehouse.

Saving Costs Is Important, But Safety and Compliance Come First
Saving Costs Is Important, But Safety and Compliance Come First

Our Chilean customer purchased two shipments from China: one containing metal cleaner (Class 8 Corrosives, UN 1760) and the other containing paint thinner (Class 3 Flammable Liquids, UN 1263). The two suppliers completed production and packaging separately. The customer believed that the freight costs for shipping these two types of cargo in two separate 40-foot containers were too high and wished to consolidate them into a container.

During the loading review, GWT found that the two cargoes could not be loaded in the same container according to IMDG segregation requirements. Mixing corrosive chemicals and flammable liquids may create safety risks during transportation, and the carrier would not approve such a loading plan.

After discussing different options, GWT helped the customer switch from two 40-foot containers to two 20-foot containers. This solution complied with DG regulations while reducing transportation costs compared with the customer’s original plan. Both shipments arrived at San Antonio on schedule, and our local team completed customs clearance and final delivery separately.

We Understand Your Challenges Behind DG Shipping

Dangerous goods shipping involves more paperwork, stricter compliance requirements, and higher operational risks than general cargo. GWT aims to help you ship with confidence and get your cargo safely to its destination.

Careful Document Review

Every document is manually reviewed by the GWT team before submission. We carefully verify shipment details, DG declarations, and supporting documents to minimize errors and reduce approval risks.

Make Multi-Supplier Shipping Easier

GWT operates warehousing and cargo consolidation facilities across multiple cities in China. Whether your cargo comes from one supplier or several factories, we help you consolidate dangerous cargo and reduce the total logistics costs.

What documents are usually required for sea shipping of dangerous goods?

Many customers may think that dangerous goods transportation only needs to provide MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet). In fact, the requirements for documents vary greatly depending on the goods and the shipping company.

The involved documents usually include MSDS, dangerous goods declaration materials, packaging information, battery-related compliance documents, and some additional review documents requested by the shipping company. For products with batteries, liquids, or chemical products, the document review is usually stricter.

Can DG cargo be consolidated with general cargo?

This needs to be determined based on the category of the dangerous goods, the compatibility of the goods, the packaging situation, and the regulations of the shipping company.

Some dangerous goods can be transported together with ordinary goods, but some products, due to safety risks, may need to be allocated separate spaces or be specially isolated. In actual operations, many container consolidation schemes require the prior confirmation of the goods’ attributes and the requirements of the shipping company.

Can lithium batteries be shipped by sea?

Sure, but lithium battery goods are usually subject to more rigorous inspection than general cargo goods.

The shipping company will require the shipper to provide additional information about the batteries, test reports, and relevant compliance documents. Some routes and shipping companies have additional restrictions for lithium batteries, so it is best to confirm the transportation requirements in advance before booking the shipment.

Why do DG shipments get rejected?

In actual transportation, the situation where dangerous goods are refused for carriage is not uncommon.

The more common issues include: inconsistent declaration information, incomplete MSDS content, packaging not meeting requirements, incorrect classification of dangerous goods, or certain shipping companies and routes having restrictions on specific dangerous goods.
