The Small Details GWT Checks Before Cargo Ships to Chile

Schedule and Coordinate Your Destination Delivery

Shipping to Chile doesn’t end when the cargo arrives at the port.

Since Chile spans over 4,000 kilometers from north to south, transportation arrangements vary significantly depending on the destination. Cargo destined for Santiago is generally easier to arrange, while shipments to northern mining regions or southern industrial cities often require earlier trucking arrangements and more detailed delivery planning.

With years of experience in Latin American logistics, GWT helps customers select suitable ports, coordinate inland transportation plans, and track port and customs clearance progress through our local partner network. We aim to help customers minimize waiting times and avoid additional costs upon arrival.

Real Case Studies|Shipment from China to Chile

First-Time Battery Energy Storage System Import From China to Chile
First-Time Battery Energy Storage System Import From China to Chile

A Chilean energy company imported a lithium-ion battery energy storage system from China for the first time. The shipment involved three suppliers: battery modules from Dongguan, a battery management system (BMS) from Shenzhen, and metal enclosures from Suzhou.

When we collect the goods to our warehouse, we quickly find several issues: the Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) provided by three factories contained inconsistencies; the UN number was incorrectly listed as UN3481 instead of the correct UN3480; some battery modules were packed in standard cardboard boxes without the required hazard labels; and the batteries and metal cabinets were packed together, increasing the risk of damage during transport.

Before shipment, we assisted the client in standardizing the documentation and correcting the UN classification. The battery modules were repackaged in UN-certified cartons and labeled as Class 9 dangerous goods. During container loading, wooden partitions were used to separate the batteries from the cabinets, and air cushions were added to provide extra protection. Furthermore, we photographed the entire packaging process and prepared all necessary compliance documents before departure.

Upon arrival, the shipment successfully cleared customs. For the client, this marked their first battery energy storage project imported from China; for us, it served as a timely reminder that investing more time in preparation before departure often saves significant time upon the goods’ arrival.

Factory Cargo Loading For Chile Shipment
Five Days Before the LC Deadline, the Customer Still Had No Confirmed Space

A folding-bed manufacturer in Tianhe, Guangzhou, was preparing a 3×40HQ shipment to Iquique, Chile, under LC. The LC required shipment by April 30, with the insurance policy naming the consignee as the beneficiary.

With only five days left, the original forwarder had still not secured container space, while the sailing schedule was already under pressure. A missed LC deadline could mean document discrepancies, delayed payment, and additional storage costs.

GWT took over the shipment with the cargo already production-ready. Through our long-term cooperation with shipping lines, three 40HQ containers were secured by April 28, followed by factory loading on April 29. At the same time, the insurance policy was prepared according to the LC requirements, with the Bill of Lading, commercial invoice, packing list, and other shipping documents checked against the LC terms.

By April 30, all three containers had completed export customs procedures and were ready for loading within the required deadline. The shipper submitted the documents without LC discrepancies and received payment on schedule, avoiding the additional costs and risks associated with a missed shipment deadline.

What documents are usually required for customs clearance in Chile?

Usually, the following will be used for customs clearance:

  • Commercial Invoice
  • Packing List
  • Bill of Lading
  • HS Code
  • Description of Goods Information

We will advise our clients to check the documents, declare the value, and mark information in advance before the goods are shipped out, in order to reduce the risk of being inspected or required to provide additional documents upon arrival at the port.

Can GWT help integrate the goods from multiple Chinese suppliers?

GWT will first consolidate the goods from different suppliers in the warehouse and assist in handling the following:

  • Goods collection from different cities
  • Cargo consolidation in the warehouse
  • Check of shipping marks and labels
  • Package reinforcement
  • Document verification
Why do sea shipments to Chile often experience delays?

Many of the shipping schedules from China to Chile are not direct shipments. The vessel is usually transshipped at ports such as Panama and Callao in Peru. Therefore, the overall delivery time is affected by the scheduling of the shipping company, the connection between the transfer ports, and the congestion at ports during peak seasons. GWT will proactively reserve time for you to prepare for customs clearance and goods pick-up.
